Formed in 2023, Naissance is the extension of John Law’s rapturously received ambient Renaissance, which toured to large audiences in cathedrals and sacred spaces in the UK between 2019 and 2022. Renaissance presented, to great effect, melodic improvisation, on saxophones and keyboards, over ambient vocal samples, and with live visual projections.
Naissance is a distillation of that project - both a simplification and a deepening of it.
Presenting, with saxophonist Jon Lloyd, beautifully poised, original compositions by both composers, Naissance develops further the feeling of optimistic meditation which so captivated audiences with Renaissance. The music is in the form of a conversation, rich in nuance, between two masters of their instruments. The music is entirely acoustic, apart from occasional support from minimal electronic samples and textures.
The resulting music has a quintessentially European sound and a contemporary aesthetic, containing echoes of jazz, blues and world folk music.
