Event information
Led by The Thread of Time distaff spinners, this workshop will begin by exploring the historical evidence for the use of a distaff to spin wool from the 12th century right through to the Industrial Revolution. You will then be shown how to dress a distaff with hand combed fibre before being taught the in-hand spinning technique. After sufficient time practising in-hand spinning, you will then move on to learn the short suspension technique. You will also be shown how to use wool combs to prepare fibre for the distaff and there will be opportunity to try the wool combs for yourself.
All tools are provided for the workshop and may be purchased at the end of the day if you wish to take them home with you. All fibre spun or combed may be taken home with you. Please note, this workshop is not suitable for beginners.
The course runs from 10am - 4pm and includes lunch.
Please note this event must meet our minimum number requirements in order to run. If we do not meet this requirement you will be notified at least a week prior to the start of the course and issued with a full refund including the booking fee.
