In Carmina Burana, Orff weaves an intoxicating mix of medieval poetry and student drinking songs with a powerful battery of percussion, its opening and closing chorus ‘O Fortuna’ having become iconic in contexts far wider than the composer could have imagined. Beethoven’s 'Egmont' Overture, with its bold orchestral writing and gripping intensity, embodies the heroism and defiance of the titular character in Goethe’s tragedy, driving towards a triumphant musical resolution. To cleanse your palette, enjoy the first movement of Samuel Barber’s luscious violin concerto, served alongside offerings from the Concert Band.
