In Carmina Burana, Orff weaves an intoxicating mix of medieval poetry and student drinking songs with a powerful battery of percussion, its opening and closing chorus ‘O Fortuna’ having become iconic in contexts far wider than the composer could have imagined. The delirium of our programme extends with the hallucinations of Berlioz’s protagonist in the haunting March to the Scaffold from his Symphonie Fantastique. To cleanse your palette, enjoy the first movement of Samuel Barber’s luscious violin concerto, served alongside offerings from the Concert Band.
