Award winning saxophonist & composer Josephine Davies brings her dynamic ensemble Satori to The Crypt to celebrate the launch of ‘Weatherwards’, their fourth album on Whirlwind Recordings. The music is inspired by Josephine’s Nordic roots in the Shetland Islands, and beautifully weaves together the band’s contemporary jazz background with a hauntingly evocative folk influence.
As well as UK and European touring with Satori, Josephine runs her own jazz orchestra, The Ensō Ensemble, which is about to release its debut album ‘The Celtic Wheel of the Year Suite’ on Ubuntu Records. She is also a member of the Harper Trio, with recent performances at Patras Jazz Festival and the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, and Espial, a free jazz group with a fully improvised album out last year on Discus Records.
Pianist Alcyona Mick was recently nominated for the Parliamentary Award Jazz Musician of the year and has been performing internationally for many years with Arabic artist Natacha Atlas. A composer and bandleader in her own right, she writes for her band ‘Blink’ and her duo with saxophonist Tori Freestone, as well as the London Jazz Orchestra and various independent films.
Bassist Dave Whitford, winner of the Paul Hamlyn award, moved from Cornwall to London to attend Middlesex University, followed by a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As one of the UK’s most in demand side-men, he is currently engaged in projects with Christine Tobin, Claire Martin and Liam Noble, and has recorded with Bill Frisell, Steve Lacy, and the NDR Big Band in Germany.
Jay Davis is an award-winning drummer and composer based in London. A proud recipient of the Yamaha Jazz scholar prize, he studied with drummers Dave Walsh, Jeff Williams and Martin France at Leeds college of music and the Royal Academy of Music. He plays regularly with top UK musicians including John Turville, Alex Western-King and Alex Hitchcock as well as leading his own band Badtrad and contributing as co-leader to Big Bad Wolf alongside Owen Dawson and Mike de Souza.
