Event information
February is the time to remember one of the most significant events in Manchester history: the Munich Air Disaster. Irish Mancunian presents a screening of “United” starring David Tennant, along with a presentation recalling the impact of the disaster on United and the reaction in Manchester.
Film “UNITED”:
Based on the true story of Manchester United's legendary "Busby Babes", the youngest side ever to win the Football League, and the 1958 Munich Air Crash that claimed eight of their number. David Tennant stars as assistant manager Jimmy Murphy, who kept the club going while Matt Busby lay critically ill in a Munich hospital.
Presentation “DISASTER & TRIUMPH":
A presentation telling the story of the Busby Years. You'll hear readings including Louis Rocca's letter inviting Matt to be our new manager; an extract from David Peace's new book on Munich; and Nobby Stiles' reaction to the disaster. You'll see footage from United's 1948 and 1957 Cup Finals and the game against Sheffield Wednesday after Munich. You can sing along to United songs including 'Manchester United Calypso', 'The Flowers of Manchester' and 'Off To Europe in the Red'.
