Ever wondered why Cricket Road is named as such? Why are there two pubs called The Cricketers in this neck of the woods? Find out by showing up at this talk which tracks the rich history of cricket in this area. Michael Stimpson has recently published a book on the subject, it is a fascinating read. Before William Morris began building his factories, Cowley was well known for something other than car production. It might come as a surprise to know, but that something was cricket! With cricket being played on Cowley Marsh, generations of professional cricketers came from the small village of Temple Cowley throughout the Victorian era. Eventually, in the 1920’s and early 30’s, two cricketers from Temple Cowley played Test match cricket for England. Michael Stimpson, author of ‘The Cricket Professionals of Oxford’ will tell the remarkable tale of how Cowley was once a cricketing stronghold ….
