Event information
Long-time friends and collaborators Tom Millar and Matthew Sulzmann were inspired to create tonight’s programme after having played a rather special black-tie birthday concert a few summers ago - more on this at the gig. It will feature absolute classics by Herbie Hancock, some original compositions, and cherry-picked standards by the likes of Cedar Walton and Joe Henderson. Millar and Sulzmann will present this co-led quartet programme for Way Out West, joined tonight by Dave Ingamells on drums and Will Harris on bass.
Tom Millar is a London-based pianist, composer and bandleader, and has now been a member of Way Out West jazz collective for over a decade. His music has been heard on BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM, and he has performed all over the UK and Ireland, as well as in Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Holland, Dubai, Qatar, and the USA.
Matthew Sulzmann is a London-based soprano/alto saxophonist and composer. In addition to leading his own quintet, he has performed with Neon Orchestra, Dom Ingham Sextet, James Brady’s “Voyagers”, and the London Jazz Orchestra.
“Millar’s writing is part of a lineage of polished modernism whose building blocks are to be found in the holy trinity of Herbie, Chick and Bill Evans, but whose additional masonry has pleasing echoes of their scions, namely Pat Metheny and Brian Blade. At its highpoint the performance reaches a poetic, pastoral grace.” Kevin Le Gendre
“beautifully articulated piano lines … Millar’s percussive composition ‘Rain in Rio’ [was] an audience favourite” Jazzwise
“confident and assured soprano” – Jazzwise
