The name came originally from Shakespeare
"Full fathom five thy father lies, Of his bones are coral made, Those are pearls that were his eyes, Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea change, into something rich and strange."
Song sung by Ariel from The Tempest William Shakespeare
We fashion notes and rhythms into something 'rich and strange' creating a joyful atmosphere, often leading to outbreaks of spontaneous dancing and clapping!
