Event information
Widely recognized as one of the UK’s classiest jazz and swing singers and double bassists, Nicola Farnon is embarking on an exciting new venture that showcases her versatility as both a musician and songwriter. Known for her infectious passion, swinging style, and charismatic stage presence, Nicola has spent over 30 years captivating audiences across the UK and beyond. From Glastonbury to international tours and BBC Radio 3 appearances, she has shared stages with jazz legends like Dave Newton, Digby Fairweather, Jim Mullen, and Alan Barnes, and performed alongside stars such as Eliane Elias, Courtney Pine, and Georgie Fame.
Now, Nicola is exploring a fresh and intimate direction with a new piano trio line-up - leaving her double bass behind for the evening. Accompanying herself on piano for the first time, Nicola is joined by Sheffield's own - the wonderfully talented Chris Walker on guitar and Amir Hekmat on percussion - to help her reimagine her original songs. Blending soul, jazz, gospel, country and folk influences, the trio offers a heartfelt and stripped-back approach to Nicola’s music, highlighting the emotional depth and artistry she’s become known for.
This new chapter builds on a decade of musical evolution for Nicola, and has led to her venturing into more eclectic territories with her originals bands The Made Ups and The Make Ups in recent years. The trio’s debut performance at Café #9 is a unique opportunity to experience Nicola’s creative journey in one of Sheffield’s most intimate and atmospheric venues.
With a remarkable musical pedigree—professional classical musician parents and the late Robert Farnon as her great-uncle—Nicola’s career began with the cello and piano before she fell in love with jazz in her twenties. Her extraordinary versatility, coupled with her ability to connect deeply with audiences, makes this special performance one not to miss.

"We were like putty in her hands. She has the unique talent to make it appear that each song that she sings is just for you, and that it is the very first time that she has ever sung it. She is the ultimate professional, with a charismatic personality that is rare in all but the top artists". Big Band Buddies Magazine
