Event information
Heraldry cannot be overlooked at St. Mary’s. It adorns the painted windows and seventeenth-century monuments, appearing in carvings and paintings and reaching almost obsessive concentration in the great St.John family polyptych. What may seem a complex or even unfathomable display of symbols to a modern day audience was an open book to 17th visitors, proclaiming power, wealth and historic alliances that stretched back generations. And if you were unfortunate, like Lady Diana Spencer, 2nd Viscountess Bolingbroke, you could see your Arms wiped out on account of divorce.
Stephen Slater is a Council Member of The Heraldry Society of England and has lectured widely throughout Britain and Europe. He has a special interest in the local heraldry of Wiltshire. We are delighted that Stephen has agreed to give us an informal Q and A style talk, so please come with questions to the ready.
Tea and refreshments will be served after the event and included in the ticket price. Numbers are restricted to 30 to ensure good visibility in the church building.
