Event information
Commissioned and produced by Pete Townshend and created by Reg Meuross, Fire & Dust - The Woody Guthrie Story, is a journey into the heart and soul of one of America’s finest folk musicians.
“Reg’s terrific songs tell Woody’s life story with respect and affection, but also truth.“ ~ Pete Townshend
At this show Reg is joined by three members of his band - The Strike - the name drawing from the energy of collective action bringing Fire & Dust to life and channelling the spirit of Guthrie’s defiant activism, creative brilliance, and unyielding hope for justice.
The Strike are Phil Beer (The Albion Band, Johnny Coppin, Show of Hands); Welsh pianist and accordionist Geraint Watkins (Nick Lowe, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney) and renowned string player Marion Fleetwood (TRADarrr, IOTA, The Sandy Denny Project and Fleetwood Cave)
With songs and stories that highlight Guthrie’s fight against racism, inequality, and injustice, Fire & Dust draws poignant parallels between Guthrie’s time and our present day. Townshend saw this project as drawing a direct line from Woody Guthrie through Bob Dylan to Reg Meuross, and described it as “folk music at its best.”
This extraordinary performance combines Meuross’s song-writing mastery with Guthrie’s enduring legacy, creating an unforgettable evening of music, storytelling, and history.
“His song-writing comes straight from the heart, the melodies fall under the fingers. This is folk music at its best.” ~ Pete Townshend
“There’s something special about the way he writes and delivers a song” ~ Townes Van Zandt
