Alex Fryer conducts great composers from German-speaking lands provide this programme spanning the 19th century. Mendelssohn depicts the mermaid Melusine in the 1834 overture dedicated to his sister Fanny, and Mahler a journeyman overcoming romantic disappointment in 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' at the century's end, sung by outstanding young mezzo-soprano Annabel Kennedy.
