The Country Soul Sessions invite you to an evening with eclectic flashes of Country, Rock N' Roll, Americana, ‘Urban’ Folk and of course Country Soul ♩♫ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♪
The Black*Scarr Band
We are always delighted when Black*Scarr return to the Country Soul but this time around it’s with the addition of electric guitar, bass and drums it is in fact The Black*Scarr Band! Formed by East London duo Emma Scarr & Johnny Black, whose differing writing styles and influences have collided to produce a rather lovely marriage of dreamy realism. Black*Scarr perform an honest, gritty, urban folk style with narrative driven tunes that are classic but yet utterly modern in their everyday relevance. For this Session they will be accompanied by Steve Bottcher (electric guitar/dobro/mandolin), Brad Wray (electric bass) and Pete Abernethy (snare/percussion). Prepare to tap your toes to upbeat melodic tunes and be touched by hard-hitting, yet poetic lyrics that will stay with you. Quite simply, “One of the best acts around by a country mile!”

The True Believers
The CSS is also delighted that South London outfit The True Believers will also be returning to play for us at the July CSS. Named after Nanci Griffith’s ‘Last of The True Believers’ the band formed in Ladywell in SE London in 2016. Influenced by classic acts such as Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell, Pentangle Et al. the band play their own brand of Americana/Country/Folk and have released two LP’s ‘Songs In The Key Of Heartbreak’ (2020) and ‘The Garden Sessions’ (2023) to fine acclaim. For this Session The True Believers will be in full band mode featuring Steve Gribbin (vocals/harmonies/semi-acoustic guitar), Alice Renouf (vocals/harmonies), Andy Kimmance (lead guitar), Dave Howell (bass), Joe Martin (fiddle/harmony vocals) and Kevin Wiremu (drums)

Robert Hacker Jessett
We are extremely pleased to say that South London born singer/songwriter Robert Hacker Jessett will also be joining us for the July Country Soul. Mr Jessett or commonly known as ‘Hacker’ is of course one half of the amazing ‘urban country’ duo Morton Valence an outfit that the Country Soul has always considered a class act. Throughout his musical journey Robert has also participated in a whole host of collaborations with the likes of BJ Cole, Band Of Holy Joy, Alabama 3 etc.. and now we see him branching out yet again with the release of his debut solo single 'Punch Drunk’. He describes himself as a modern-day balladeer with an eye firmly focused on the world around him, utilising a narrative style which is more akin to old country songwriting, but yet set in his own backyard of South London. Like his work with Morton Valence Robert Hacker Jessett has created a unique style with a voice which is very much his own. Come and see the Man doing what he does.
