Born in Guyana but living in the UK since 1971, Maggie Harris is a writer of poetry, short stories and a memoir, Kiskadee Girl. She has been performing her work since the 90s, has represented Kent in Europe, was International Teaching Fellow at Southampton University, and has worked as a creative writing tutor and collaborated in several arts projects. As a Royal Literary Fund Fellow, she has been running their Reading Round project in Margate in 2024-25.
Maggie’s awards include the Wales Poetry Award, the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and The Guyana Prize for Literature. She has also received several Arts Council Awards, the most recent being to enable a visit to Guyana’s rainforests, a location featured powerfully in her latest collection. I Sing to the Greenhearts, published in February by Seren Books, is her 7th collection and has already received glowing reviews:
‘Maggie Harris is to be applauded for giving us poems of such freshness and vivacity:’ The Lake Poetry. ‘… a very fine collection, one that I will be returning to time and time again:’ Write Out Loud. ‘I Sing to the Greenhearts is a thought-provoking book, challenging readers, making us stretch our concept of the power of poetry:’ London Grip.
