Event information
You’re invited to join Becky Foord, Banjo Jen and Phil Hooley for a relaxed, intimate songwriters’ round at Café no.9, where they will take turns to sing their original material and give insights into the stories behind the songs …and possibly some off-tangent ramblings too!
Becky Foord is a singer-songwriter whose soft, assured collection of folk/americana songs reflect her love of the North Yorkshire moors where she grew up, the people, places and family life. Her voice has been described as ‘enchanting’, and her songs ‘full of warmth, heartfelt’. Her love of songwriting is shared in her piece ‘The Music Room’, which can be found on her last EP ‘Thank you Blue’.
Banjo Jen has been described as difficult to categorise but easy to fall for. Her unique brand of folky Americana, with insightful observations and an eclectic original repertoire, has seen her gain a growing reputation as one to watch on the UK singer-songwriter scene. She has played many folk and Americana festivals across the country, including Maverick, Saltburn Folk festival and Gate to Southwell, and was selected by the Americana Association UK to showcase at both Red Rooster and The Long Road. With razor-sharp songwriting, percussive Appalachian step-dancing and engaging between-song banter, her refreshingly original live act is guaranteed to win the heart of every crowd.
Phil Hooley cites Guy Clark, John Prine and Nick Lowe among his many influences, and his songs are lyrically driven and always thought provoking. With an easy stage presence, Phil has received many plaudits for his live shows, and has played several prestigious venues, including Black Deer Festival, The Sound Lounge, The British Country Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, and has opened for Robert Vincent, Chris Difford, The Remedy Club, Sara Petite among many others, over the last few years. He has released two albums to date, “Songs From The Back Room” and “Provenance”, both receiving critical acclaim from reviewers.
