Event information
Join award-winning author Travis Elborough on a tour of the Spitalfields, a district made by French Huguenot silk weavers and subsequently enriched by further waves of Jewish and Bangladeshi migrants; an area that is overshadowed by the looming presence of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s doomy majestic Christ Church and haunted by the dark stains of Jack Ripper’s murders and the lost landscape of the Old Nichol, once London’s most notorious slum and the setting of Arthur Morrison’s A Child of Jago.
Along the way we’ll encounter vanishing Jewish mystics, one of the capital's earliest council estates and the contemporary art world’s most successful double act on a time-bending tour of the byways and back streets of Brick Lane.
Described by “The Guardian” as “one of the country’s finest pop culture historians”, Travis Elborough is the author of many books, including “Wish You Were Here: England on Sea”, “The Long-Player Goodbye”, and “Through the Looking Glasses: The Spectacular Life of Spectacles”.
