We’re delighted to welcome the Alan Barnes Quartet back to Highams Park Jazz Club following their impressive concert here last year. This is a fantastic opportunity to see one of the UK’s most respected jazz groups perform live once again.
At the helm is Alan Barnes, a remarkable multi-reed player who masterfully handles all the saxophones, clarinet, and bass clarinet. With a career spanning over 45 years, Alan is known for his brilliant technique, deep musical expression, and warm, collaborative spirit. He’s played with some of the biggest names in jazz and beyond—from Stan Tracey and John Dankworth to Bryan Ferry and Jamie Cullum—and has earned over 30 British Jazz Awards. He’s also been twice named BBC Jazz Musician of the Year. Alan’s versatility and creativity make him a true giant of British jazz.
On piano, David Newton joins Alan once again, continuing a partnership that has lasted an incredible 47 years. David is widely regarded as one of the finest solo jazz pianists in the country, combining exquisite touch, harmonic sensitivity, and perfect accompaniment skills. Their long-standing musical connection means the band’s interplay is telepathic, delivering music that’s both deeply empathetic and highly entertaining.
The rhythm section features Andrew Cleyndert on double bass, a virtuoso known for his swinging bass lines and inventive solos that add both drive and imagination to the group. Drummer Joe Edwards, though a relative newcomer compared to the rest, brings a fresh, energetic swing that’s both subtle and compelling, completing the quartet’s dynamic sound.
The Alan Barnes Quartet’s repertoire is impressively wide, covering everything from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to Art Pepper, Chick Corea, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the Great American Songbook. Their performances are packed with swinging jazz, accessible melodies, and lively interplay, all delivered with a great sense of humour and plenty of stories to keep the evening engaging.
Alan and David’s latest album, ‘Tis Autumn, released on Woodville Records, has received glowing reviews. Critics have praised its empathic world-class jazz, noting the duo’s flawless communication and expressive playing, whether it’s Alan’s warm alto sax or David’s tasteful piano.
