ZonaSur is back for screening no 3! This time we'll be projecting two remarkable cinematic stories of migration, diaspora, race and identity.
Resilient Roots will consider the experience of moving between worlds—whether by choice, necessity or force. How does the disjuncture of migrations past and present shape an individual's sense of belonging, their idea of self and their relationship to culture and ancestry?
We'll be screening Burnt Milk (2023, Jamaica, 10 minutes) by Joseph Douglas Elmhirst and NEGRA (2020, Mexico, 72 minutes) by Medhin Tewolde, so together we can explore these complex, interwoven issues from different geographical and cultural perspectives.
Seen in one evening, these films offer powerful meditations on the endurance and evolution of roots; on the shifting yet steadfast stories we carry with us to new realities.
The screening will be followed by a relaxed audience discussion - special guest to be announced!
Come and join us to engage with two beautiful, profound and thought-provoking works of cinema from underrepresented Caribbean and Latin American filmmakers. Let's deepen our shared understanding and broaden our horizons through appreciation and friendly dialogue.
