Lou Barnell and Quieting present a work in progress
Support from Gris Marguerite.
a showing of Poor on the Roll' a short film from 'The Hurrier' by Anne Robinson.
A sonic and visual investigation into the use of The “Scolds Bridal” an example of which is held in the collection at Bishops’ House.
The Scolds Bridle currently held in the collection at Bishops House, Sheffield is described as a form of punishment “...to stop wagging tongues”. This performance is an act of reclamation and relabelling for the bridle.
Quieting and Lou use electronic sound, voice and movement as shapeshifting materials to trace, transform and release the spectres of words unspoken by the women who were forced to wear the bridle.
They will examine the mouth, the voice, and material as sound sources and conduits for tenderness, energies and destruction.
Through visceral, exhilarating frequencies, movement, text and voice, we invite you to experience a catharsis of tongues and bodies that imagines new futures by chewing the past.
Anne Robinson’s 'Poor on the Roll' is an is an artist’s film - made as part of 'The Hurrier' project about labour, sex, time travel and working class women’s bodies.
Gris Marguerite is an audio-visual performance, by Wesley Loveday (film editing) and Sarah McWatt (music). It is an exploration of nightmares developed from conversations about dreams between the two artists over many years. Instruments include processed assorted woodwind, tuned bicycle wheel, voice, hulusi and feline percussion. Performance takes place from within a black pyramid and includes some grotesque physical manifestations spilling out from inside.
