Event information

Here's what Ian will cover during the workshop, and what you need to bring. Any questions, please email boxoffice@ashburtonarts.org.uk.
It'll start at 10.30am and end at 1.30pm.

Please come with a song prepared (and a second contrasting one, which might be covered if there's time). Bring a song chart for Ian if possible.
If you have an original composition, make sure the chart/music is clear. If you're singing a popular song or standard, it's likely Ian will know these. (Ian recommends – especially for the true jazzers! – downloading the 'IReal' app on your pad or mobile.)
The essence of a masterclass is to perform your songs to the group - enjoying and benefitting from the support and ears of your singer peers on the day. Ian always creates a secure and fun group spirit - but learning and sharpening your performance craft is uppermost. Each performance will demonstrate singer/performer issues that can be shared and improved on as the day unfolds.
The day will begin with a fairly rigorous (but huge fun) vocal warm-up - so wear comfy clothes!
Ian will cover:
How to use your stage space
Truth in performance
Choice of material
How to practise with (and without) a pianist or guitarist
Range and choice of keys
Counting in
Emotional 'arcs' in songs
Vibrato and resonance
How to breathe to get the best sound
Storytelling
Improvisation and inventing new melodies as good as the original
Creating variety in your set
How to get the best sound onstage (soundcheck tips)
