The Woodland Trust writes:
“Join Dave Rickwood, site manager at Ausewell Wood, to find out how we are caring for this precious temperate rainforest habitat, the work that has taken place over the past 6 years and our exciting plans as we expand into the recently acquired Buckland Wood.
Whether you have visited or not, come along to find out why these woods and the wildlife within them are so special and to ask us any questions.
Ausewell Wood, co-owned with the National Trust, is an excellent example of temperate rainforest. When we bought it in partnership with the National Trust in 2019, we started the slow process of removing the densely planted conifers to make space for native species to return. Since then with the help of our volunteers, we have seen sunlight reach the dormant ancient soils, created a thriving habitat for rare wildlife including pine martens, raptors and pied flycatchers. Now, we urgently need to do the same next door at Buckland Wood.
More about Ausewell Wood
Buckland Wood - Inspired by the restoration work taking place next door in Ausewell, the owners of Buckland Wood support our vision for conserving Devon’s temperate rainforest. We've been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy and restore 102 hectares (252 acres) of this rare habitat. Buckland is special for many reasons; it has some of the world's rarest lichens, it is home to threatened bird species like the goshawk, and it is in need to restoration. Restoring Buckland will help us unlock a huge area of temperate rainforest recovery and create a more resilient habitat.
