Event information

The Magic Lantern, the moniker of singer-songwriter and composer Jamie Doe, hosts a three night residency at London's Servant Jazz Quarters on 23, 24 and 25 November 2025. Conceived as a 'Festival of Feeling' the residency explores the unique ability of songs to help us make sense of the limitless depth of our shared human experience.

Songs help us to understand ourselves, to make sense of the momentous and the mundane, but above all to articulate our feelings - the ones we can name and the ones we can’t, the ones we’re proud of and the ones that scare us. The Magic Lantern’s ‘Festival of Feeling’ celebrates the songs that bring us together and their ability to tell the truth, however difficult.

The Magic Lantern have invited a range of incredible songwriters from London, Brazil, Scotland, Sweden and beyond to join them over three nights that will be equally joyous and devastating.

For this second night of the residency The Magic Lantern, performing with full band, will be joined by Luizga and Samantha Whates.
Luizga

LUIZGA is Luiz Gabriel Lopes, a Brazilian singer-songwriter and music producer with roots spread over many territories. Raised in the countryside of Minas Gerais, he grew up listening to the songs his family created, which are still his greatest source of inspiration. Since 2010, he has been crossing the world with his guitar on his back, performing all over Brazil, and also reaching Latin America, Europe, USA and Asia. LUIZGA is a nomad; a globe-traveller, researching and exchanging music everywhere he steps by. His unique style on voice and guitar heirs to the richest lineages of MPB, also mixing influences from pop, folk and world music.

Samantha Whates

Scottish singer-songwriter and Rough Trade Records recording artist Samantha Whates is a hugely respected figure on the UK folk & roots scene. Her beautifully crafted, poetic songs have an acute ear for the pain and beauty of the human experience. Retaining a strong affinity with her Scottish roots, cultivating a sound that is thoroughly contemporary, rooted somewhere in tradition, yet uniquely her own. Her self taught, not really folky, finger picking style is structurally bold, incorporating pure vocal performance amid raw field recordings often willing to push at conventions. With an enduring passion for collaboration, counter melody and close harmony, you’re as likely to find Whates singing backing vocals on worldwide arena tours for Noel Gallagher or soundtracking esoteric animation and Balearic tunes as you are recording a duet whilst sitting in a canoe with award winning Danish singer-songwriter Ida Wenøe.
