THE TALKS ...
Heating makes up a substantial portion of out carbon footprint, and this evening will investigate why reducing energy used to heat your home is so important - particularly in period homes - and what measures make the most difference to our energy use. From heat pumps to wall insulation to draught-proofing, and all the affordable measures in between - find out how to Green Your Home, save on bills, and increase your comfort.
1) The evening will begin with a fascinating overview and insights from David Farmer on the development of, need for and and ongoing research in the Energy House Labs at University of Salford, where a 22 strong team is dedicated to advancing the understanding of building energy performance. He'll shine a scientific, evidence-based light on energy efficiency - from the big investments to the quick hacks.
The groundbreaking facilities at Energy House Labs include Energy House 1 (a whole Victorian terraced house built within an environmental chamber to particularly test the performance of retrofit products), Energy House 2.0 (one of the largest purpose-built building performance test laboratories in the world), the Smart Meters Smart Homes Lab, the Salford Smart Home, and the UKAS accredited Thermal Measurement Laboratory.
2) Dermot Barnes will then pick up on the importance of a whole house plan, outlining the principles of heat loss and taking both a scientific and principles based approach to developing a linear, but holistic programme for retrofitting and building energy efficiency.
3) Stuart McIlroy will then offer an insulation installer's insights into the practicals of product installation, using case studies to illustrate the options of methods, materials, timescales, costs and the impact on your home, across underfloor, loft and internal wall insulation.
