Home When You Return dir. Carl Elsaesser (USA, 2021, 31 mins)
A tender yet oppressive experimental documentary. Elsaesser blurs faces and names, weaves in handwritten letters and melodramas by Joan Thurber Baldwin, to create an evocative portrait of his grandmother. A dedication to our matriarchs and the way they build homes out of houses.
A Ghost Story dir. David Lowery (USA, 2017, 93 mins)
Lowery’s quiet revelation starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara is a different take on the ‘haunted house’. There are no jump scares here; just chalk outlines of grief. This film explores the marks we leave on the places we live in and the people we live with. An ode to the shadows we leave on our domestic spaces, and how they ring across space and time.
