Lucy Randell approaches Amy Winehouse’s catalogue with a deep respect for its musical complexity. She emphasizes timing, phrasing and tonal contrast, the way Winehouse would land a word just behind the beat or hang a note into silence, rather than surface imitation. Lucy rejects mimicry; she interprets the songs through her own jazz and soul sensibility.
Her career includes features with session groups and appearances around the UK and Australia, and she has performed at venues like Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café and KOKO, stages Amy herself frequented. In a Camden Market event, Lucy articulated her method:
“To sing Amy Winehouse you have to recognise that rhythm and tonal texture, and her timing. You really have to listen to how she lands her syllables.” Camden New Journal
Expect a set drawn from Back to Black and Frank, delivered with Lucy’s own instrumentation and arrangements. Highlights often include “Valerie,” “Tears Dry On Their Own,” “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Love Is a Losing Game”. She yields space for the band, piano, upright bass, guitar, drums, to echo Amy’s roots in jazz, soul and R&B.
