The last Monday of every month here is Not Only But also The Blues where we feature some of the finest exponents in the south west, and beyond, of music whose roots are in the blues.
Ritchie Lane
Ritchie has played and toured across the UK, Europe and beyond in the last 30 years playing venues as diverse as the legendary but diminutive Ain’t Nothin’ But… in Central London to the beautiful Municipal Hall at Colne as part of the Great British Rhythm and Blues festival. He signed to Sticky records with The Freeze in the late 1990s and has played for many other bands on the London circuit and here in the south west with The Primitive Noise Band. His solo show consists of a mix of original material and covers in a bluesy roots style played on a mix of acoustic and resonator guitars.
“No gimmicks just a man and his guitar and voice.”
“Majestic command on the guitar. great stage presence, blistering guitar. If James Dean had sung the blues it would have sounded like this!” Bill Smith, Blues In Britain
In March 2009 the editor of Guitar Player Magazine (USA) picked Ritchie as one of their Big Eight Players.

Bad Knees Blues Band
This well known, dynamic blues band has played festivals, pubs and clubs in the South West for 18 years. Playing a mix of original and blues classics, Richard Pickles leads on guitar, slide and vocals. His son Jonathan on bass and backing vocals and Keith Smallwood on drums provide a rock solid and creative rhythm section. Martin Wheeler on guitar and vocals completes the band. Richard began his musical career back in the 1960s when he played with bands touring with and supporting David Bowie, Canned Heat, Free and Derek and the Dominoes. “A great set of rocking blues is guaranteed!”
These monthly sessions are curated by local bassist, Mary Caffrey. If you'd like to be considered for a spot on one of these nights, either on the main bill, or in the short open mic session that happens in the middle of the evening, email mary.caffrey49@gmail.com
