On 4 January 1642, Charles I marched into Westminster intent on arresting five Members of Parliament. Although “the birds had flown”, this action set in motion a series of events that led to bloodshed, civil war, and a nation changed forever. This is the story of an English people’s political awakening, of remarkable but flawed characters with difficult choices, and a society in profound distress.
Jonathan Healey is Associate Professor in Social History at the University of Oxford. He spoke at StonyWords in 2024 about his previous book - The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England.
