Event information

This event marks 50 years since the opening of Portsmouth Central Library and explores the creation of the Library as a ‘City Crown’ building by architect Ken Norrish, within the context of redesigning the town’s central square. Original sketches, architectural influences—including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum, Portsmouth’s Brutalist Tricon building, and London’s Barbican—will help frame the story of this iconic public space.
Three architects will present the narrative from distinct perspectives:
• Dr Milena Metalkova-Markova, Associate Professor at the University of Portsmouth, specializes in heritage-led regeneration and conservation practice.
• Sam Brooks, a practicing conservation architecture specialist and PhD student focusing on modern heritage, who has developed a 3D model of the Tricorn.
• November Tan, November Tan, a heritage practitioner and PhD student, is researching the library’s creation, transformation, and community engagement.
The event will include reflections from those involved in the library’s launch and early users, offering a rich, multi-voiced account of its legacy.
