Formed by two seasoned acoustic musicians whose love of Celtic and folk traditions runs deep,
Duff Paddy bring warmth, humour and instrumental flair to every performance. Guitarist & vocalist
Paul Mitchell (UK) and accordion/bodhran player & vocalist Paul Tuthill (from Dublin, now based in
Germany) fuse their distinct talents into a vibrant duo that delights audiences across folk clubs,
festivals, and intimate venues alike.
Origins & Heritage
Both Pauls began playing in their teens and have built rich musical careers throughout the UK and
beyond. They share Irish roots as proud descendants of the historic McCarthy clan of County Kerry,
and Paul Tuthill's great uncle was the celebrated Irish writer and songwriter Sean McCarthy.
At the age of just 16, Paul Tuthill was voted All-Ireland bodhran champion - a testament to his
extraordinary virtuosity on the instrument. His rhythmic drive and dynamic playing are a defining
feature of Duff Paddy's live set, while Paul Mitchell contributes finely-tuned guitar work, a strong
vocal presence, and a deep passion for storytelling and song.
Sound & Style
Duff Paddy's repertoire sits at the intersection of traditional Irish, Scottish, and English folk and
modern acoustic styles, including touches of Americana and Alt-Country. Their sets balance lively
instrumental reels and jigs with heartfelt ballads - both covers and original compositions - all
performed with the duo's characteristic warmth and humour.
Album & Releases
In 2017, Duff Paddy released their album Hotel Connemara, available on CD and across all major
streaming platforms. The album showcases their dual strengths as entertainers and musicians: tight
harmonies, engaging arrangements, and a blend of lively instrumentals and evocative songs that
capture the duo's spirit.
Live Performance & Personality
What truly sets Duff Paddy apart is not only their musicianship but the engaging, humorous
experience they bring to the stage. Their shows are filled with witty banter, storytelling, and
audience interaction - from impromptu sing-alongs to playful exchanges between the two Pauls.
This infectious energy, combined with instrumental precision, has earned them loyal audiences
throughout the UK, Europe, and the USA.
Key Milestones & Collaborations
• Performed in folk clubs, village halls, and festivals across the UK, Europe, and the USA.
• Featured at events such as Irish Night at Banbury Folk Club (March 2020).
• Shared stages (as individuals and as Duff Paddy) with musicians including Ronnie Drew (The
Dubliners), Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention / Jethro Tull), and Danny Thompson (Pentangle / John
Martyn).
• Released their album Hotel Connemara on CD and digital platforms worldwide.
What's Next
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Duff Paddy's touring schedule has slowed, partly due to travel
restrictions between the UK and Germany and the decline in small folk venues across Europe.
Despite the pause, the duo remain active, writing, recording, and maintaining their connection with
fans.
In 2026, Duff Paddy look forward to returning to live performance with an appearance at Folk on the
Pier in Cromer - marking a much-anticipated reunion on stage and a celebration of the music that
connects audiences to their Celtic roots.
Beyond 2026, the duo continue to evolve, with new recordings and live dates planned, staying true
to their mission: bringing Celtic roots into a fresh acoustic form, combining musicianship, humour,
and heart in equal measure.
