There are many famous witchcraft cases across the UK, including Devon's own Bideford Witches. Yet there are countless other less sensational cases languishing in records offices, their stories all but lost to us. Tracey Norman explores some
of these cases, focusing on the little-examined Victorian and Edwardian eras. What kind of beliefs were prevalent in this fifty-year period? What was happening in communities? How were cases featuring witchcraft dealt with in the press, and what was the attitude
of those in authority towards such cases - and the people involved in them?
