Event information

“A brilliant young pianist… Stunning displays of virtuosity…a remarkable talent” – Ian Mann, The Jazz Mann
The Will Butterworth Trio is a dynamic and interactive jazz trio that has been a significant presence on the jazz scene. The trio is known for its focus on musical empathy and communication, often creating a stimulating musical conversation. The trio's performances are characterised by their spacious and fractious beauty, showcasing Butterworth's virtuosity and ability to capture a sense of atmosphere with well-placed notes.
Will Butterworth grew up in Devon playing classical music on the cello and improvising on the piano. Since moving to London in 2003, precociously talented pianist Will has played in all of the top venues and been heard on Radio 3, 4 and classic FM. Double bassist Marcus Vergette finds time for gigging and recording alongside his career as a sculptor, working the North Devon farm where he has lived and worked for nearly forty years and, now, launching a record label, Nightjar Records, to highlight new music from the South West. Vergette has played bass in various Mike Westbrook ensembles since the great man’s move back to the west country. As well as being the owner of Tiki Drums, an excellent drum builder and drum restorer, Preston Prince is also the deputy head at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). Preston has been a professional Drummer since he was 18, playing with James Hunter, Bap Kennedy, Astrid Williamson, Violla Wills, and Camille O'Sullivan to name a few. He has studied restoration and drum building as well as having an incredible depth of knowledge of vintage drums.
"His effortless poise and crisp, attractive classically-trained sound is one of his great strengths... Butterworth can capture a sense of atmosphere with well-placed notes and treads artfully between drama and intimacy and romantic sentiment and dry inquisition." - Selwyn Harris, Jazzwise
