There will also be some gorgeous music from renowned fiddler and singer Mikey Kenney and local musicians. There will be a pot luck dinner, contributions of dishes welcome (clearly labelled for allergies), and raffle with generous prizes from local businesses!
Advanced tickets are now sold out and we'll have a limited number available for £20 on the door, with any additional donations greatly appreciated!
Speakers:
Dr Caroline Crosfield – took a 3-month sabbatical from her GP position in Kent to serve as a human rights monitor in the West Bank. Based in East Jerusalem, her work with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Israel and Palestine (EAPPI) involved monitoring the right of access to worship at the Al Aqsa mosque, accompanying children to school and witnessing their harassment, monitoring demolitions of Palestinian homes and liaising with NGOs to assist, and providing a protective presence for at-risk communities as an international observer, reporting abuses to the United Nations.
Dr Sheikh Ramzy - Islamic scholar, and works with the Muslim Council of Britain and with local, national and international religious leaders of all faiths. He also founded the Oxford Islamic Information Centre.
We have two speakers coming from Denizens Society Global (https://denizenssociety.org/), a charity dedicated to empowering and protecting families, youth, and children, focusing primarily on those affected by war and displacement. Through comprehensive and targeted programs, they strive to enhance resilience, promote human rights, and improve access to essential services.
To those that know our previous panellist Dan Glazebrook, he has sadly had to pull out of the event due to a family bereavement. He sends his apologies. Harley Wisheart has also had to step down due to health issues.
Musicians:
Mikey Kenney – an influential figure within the emerging revival of the English experimental folk scene winning audiences over with his warm energy and dynamic musicality. His new album Tiny Little Light captures the essence of that alternative musical spirit: an exciting and innovative voice for our times. Hailed by many as an important conduit of learning, conserving and handing down both English and Irish traditional fiddle music in England's Northwest, Mikey is also a respected singer and songwriter, constantly composing alternative and progressive music of his own.
Claire Vine - a folk-singer, performing a mix of original compositions and traditional folk songs, reimagined using the help of a vocal looper to create sonic soundscapes. She has a knack for condensing urgent political and social commentary into concise, uncompromising moments of raw beauty. Unashamedly political and poignantly personal, her songs are inspired by protest movements, social injustice and her longing for a more sustainable world.
One Trick Donkey - Oxford's very own folk band playing and singing traditional folk music from the Balkans. Coming from near and far, the Donkeys are drawn together by an insatiable appetite for the toe-tapping and sway-inducing folk music from Eastern Europe. With their own arrangements of traditional folk melodies, they offer up an enchanting musical landscape.
