Join us on Saturday 31st January for a fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians!
The evening’s events will feature a panel discussion from some brilliant speakers covering a wide range of bases from human rights monitors in The Occupied West Bank to deep familiarity with the experiences of our own political prisoners in the UK and changes to protest rights. There will also be some gorgeous music from renowned fiddler and singer Mikey Kenney and local musicians. There will be a pot luck and a raffle with any contributions welcome!
Tickets available for £10 (early bird), £15, and £20 OTD, with any additional donations greatly appreciated!
Speakers:
Dr Caroline Crosfield – took a 3-month sabbatical from her GP position in Kent to serve as a human rights monitor in the West Bank. Based in East Jerusalem, her work with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Israel and Palestine (EAPPI) involved monitoring the right of access to worship at the Al Aqsa mosque, accompanying children to school and witnessing their harassment, monitoring demolitions of Palestinian homes and liaising with NGOs to assist, and providing a protective presence for at-risk communities as an international observer, reporting abuses to the United Nations.
Harley Wishart - an activist and a doctoral researcher at the University of Brighton, researching whether the creeping criminalisation of dissent has produced a ‘chilling effect’ on the right to protest. Their work focuses the targeted repression of Palestine solidarity and environmental justice movements, arguing that these crackdowns function to uphold the legacies of colonial accumulation. They write about this on their Substack, Feeling the Chill (https://feelingthechill.substack.com/). They are also currently supporting the family of one of the Filton 24 with the publication of a book project, Keir Starmer’s Political Prisoners.
Dan Glazebrook – an educator, writer, political journalist and lyricist, regular contributor to Middle East Eye, Counterpunch and the Morning Star. Dan is the author of Divide and Ruin: The West's Imperial Policy in an Age of Crisis; Supremacy Unravelling: Crumbling Western Dominance and the Slide to Fascism and co-author with Janet Alder of Defiance: Racial Injustice, Police Brutality, a Sister's Fight for the Truth.
Leila Davidson - Palestinian international human rights lawyer
Additional speakers have been contacted.
Musicians:
Mikey Kenney – an influential figure within the emerging revival of the English experimental folk scene winning audiences over with his warm energy and dynamic musicality. His new album Tiny Little Light captures the essence of that alternative musical spirit: an exciting and innovative voice for our times. Hailed by many as an important conduit of learning, conserving and handing down both English and Irish traditional fiddle music in England's Northwest, Mikey is also a respected singer and songwriter, constantly composing alternative and progressive music of his own.
Claire Vine - a folk-singer, performing a mix of original compositions and traditional folk songs, reimagined using the help of a vocal looper to create sonic soundscapes. She has a knack for condensing urgent political and social commentary into concise, uncompromising moments of raw beauty. Unashamedly political and poignantly personal, her songs are inspired by protest movements, social injustice and her longing for a more sustainable world.
Meadowsuite (trio) - Oxford-based folk band creating original songs which are both timeless and fresh. Rooted in our collective landscape and history, but blossoming in new directions.
