NICK SMITH
Nick began playing Guitar before switching to Drums and Percussion. His primary focus for over 40 years has been free-improvisation, playing many times in London, also Chelmsford and Colchester. Initially a member of the London Musicians Collective, from there he was a founder member of the quartet Make Shift. After a few years away from the music, Nick met up with Mark Wastell, and commenced a fruitful period of collaboration with him.
Nick has also had brief encounters in Jazz, Rock, Blues/Funk and Acoustic/Folk and occasionally sits in with a number of local Jazz- based ensembles. In April 2024 Nick played a solo percussion set for Konsztrukting Soundz as part of their initial programme, his first mostly improvised set in almost 15 years.

In recent years he has turned his attention to using electronics and effects to extend/enhance the sounds of metal percussion such as Gongs, Cymbals etc. together with pure electronic sounds. He has also developed an interest in using editing and mixing software to produce experimental soundscapes utilising samples, found sound and field recordings.

As part of the Resonance collective, Nick has contributed a track to the Recreating The Record album, and also a mix as part of the Oscillate Live series. More recently he has played live at several of the Resonance Underground Resistors events, together with EMOM evenings at both Chelmsford and Colchester. Nick has also performed a number of times with local musician and fellow improvisor Jo Morrison, in what promises to be a rewarding and developing partnership.

A specific aspect of their duo pairing has been formalised as the band STARNOSEDMOLE, and they are collaborating with Kevin Burrows and Judah McLean as part of their ongoing Jellywolf project.
Nick is keen on collaborations, from one-off events, short-term projects, or something on a longer timescale.
