JASMINA MASCHINA [http://www.myspace.com/jasminemaschine]
Jasmine Guffond, one half of the experimental electronic duo Minit (staubgold/sigma editions) has over the last 10 years been recording and performing with Minit, exhibiting sound installations, developing works of varied scope based on the use of processed acoustic, electronic, and found sound sources. Equally interested in song, composition and free, improvised music, as Jasmina Maschina she began recording songs in her Berlin homes producing her debut solo album, 'The Demolition Series', released on Staubgold in 2008. Melding the most simple and innocent chord progressions of time-honoured folk music with a noisenik's attraction to repetition, drone and inventiveness to create the sensation of paresthesia, tingling on both the skin and mind. A forthcoming split LP release with Golden Diskó Ship on Monika Enterprise, is due to come out in spring 2010.
Live, Jasmina performs hauntingly beautiful variations of her songs. Fragile layers of sound swirling magnificently around your ears, each song based on her personal style of gentle guitar picking, yet at any moment capable of interrupting into intoxicating noise, seducing you into her wonderful atmosphere.
"Superb debut album of beautiful folk guitar music from Berlin-based Machina, better known perhaps as one half of experimental electronic outfit Minit. This is straight-ahead folk filtered through an imaginative electro-prism that knocks Cat Power into a cocked hat." - TIME OUT
"'Really and truly there are no low points or filler tracks here, the songs, changing pace and instrumental colouring through out are always consistent in songwriting flare, harmonic homing and rich, accomplished and soothing playing" - MUSIQUE MACHINE
TEMPELHOF [http://www.myspace.com/tempelhofband]
We Were Not There From The Beginning. We Won't Be There For The End. is the first full-length release by Mantova, Italy-based duo Tempelhof. Taking inspiration from Bologna film library archives (Tempelhof regularly perform live soundtracks of the black-and-white and crudely-coloured early-modern cinema experiments), loneliness, solitude and William Burroughs, the album features ten two tracks of lush downtempo beauty. All tracks display Tempelhof at their best: downpours of cymbal-like hiss and mournful keys deliberately punctuate the shuffling beats. Low, impassioned vocals, dynamic but not overwrought, is the counterpoint to the subterranea of crashing rhythms and mechanical shifts and slices.
Subtle and effortless, there is passion in spades; rather than hiding behind po-faced navel gazing, it grabs you by the lapels in order to show you its bleeding heart, its desperate romance. Samples emerge, organic, then become enveloped in a morass of sound, struggling against the tide.
TOMORROW WE SAIL [http://www.myspace.com/tomorrowwesail]
Tomorrow We Sail are a Leeds-based six-piece, formed in early 2009. Influenced by music as divergent as folk, classical ambience and slowcore, they switch effortlessly from hushed tones to ear-splitting walls of noise, taking the familiar template of post-rock but with a melodicism rarely found in the genre. The band feature members of Glissando's Fleeting Glimpse Ensemble.
