Join us for February's ZonaSur Cinema Club, with a unique screening of two exceptional Latin American films and a thoughtful discussion between audience and experts!
In this instalment, titled 'Haunted Returns', we'll be focusing on how the past returns to haunt the present through memory, displacement, and unresolved violence.
In 'Tupananchiskama' (Peru, 2024), Adriana Terry offers a poetic meditation on migration and longing, where absence and return are felt through language, landscape, and ritual.
And in our main feature, Jayro Bustamante’s 'La Llorona' (Guatemala, 2019) reimagines a folkloric myth as political horror, transforming the domestic space into a site of historical reckoning.
Together, these films reveal haunting not as superstition, but as a necessary confrontation with personal and collective memory.
Dr Denisse Lazo, a Chilean academic and Lecturer in Hispanic Studies in the Department of Languages and Cultures at the University of Reading, will be joining Nick Hagan, curator of Curio Books + Culture, in conversation after the screening - with audience participation fully encouraged!
