Jean Rhys: An exploration with Poppy Wonnacott
Join Poppy Wonnacott for an exploratory talk on Jean Rhys, who wrote 'Wide Sargasso Sea', the postcolonial prequel to 'Jane Eyre', whilst living in Bude. Poppy will delve into Jean's life, her connection to Bude and the themes of madness and belonging in her short masterpiece.
‘I Used To Live Here Once - Jean Rhys in Bude’ a 35minute film by Tim Rolt
The novelist Jean Rhys came to live in Bude in 1955 at probably her lowest point - many thought she had died. Told in her own words, using extracts from the letters Jean Rhys wrote from Bude at the time, the film tells the story of her re-discovery, and how this re-invigorated her to recommence work on what would become her last and most famous book, ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’.
This special event includes a short Q&A.
