Neil Maya, one of the finest sax players of our day, joins his quartet to take us on a musical adventure with two of the most influential jazz sax players of all time, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz.
This gig will be the debut performance and launch of Neil’s quartet’s much anticipated new CD and will showcase some of the best loved works of these two jazz giants.
Alto saxophonist Charlie Parker
was one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, forging a brand new genre in jazz, bebop, with fast tempos, virtuosic technique and advanced harmonies. In this project the quartet celebrates some of Charlie’s finest compositions as well as some
great jazz standards that Charlie brought to prominence.
The Main band for this project is Neil Maya on Alto sax, Philip Clouts on piano, Kev Sanders on double bass and Gary Evans on drums. (personnel can change due to other diary commitments)
Expect to hear great Charlie Parker originals such as… Ornithology, Donna Lee, Anthropology, Blues for Alice, Confirmation, My Little Suede Shoes, Yardbird Suite and others. And some great Charlie Parker arranged standards, originally recorded by Charlie such as…Cherokee, All the Things You Are, Summer Time, A Night In Tunisia, What Is This Thing Called Love
Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, known as “The Sound”, was one of the twentieth Century’s most influential jazz musicians. The quartet is delighted to dive into the prolific musical legacy that Getz left to the world. Stan Getz released nearly 100 albums under his own name in his lifetime (another 20 were released posthumously) as well as nearly 40 as a sideman and many compilations. Catching the end of the big band era, especially with Woody Herman’s 2nd herd (Four Brothers), Getz went on to forge a prolific solo career in the 1950s before becoming one of the main instigators of the bossa nova craze of the early 1960’s (The Girl From Ipanema, One Note Samba, Corcovado). Stan Getz continued to remain highly productive through the next 3 decades including an album of Bacharach and David (What the World Needs Now) an album with a young Chick Corea (Captain Marvel) and many more before stopping shortly before his death in 1991.
The quartet will take you through some of Getz’s most famous recordings as well as a few surprises with brief commentary on his also his colourful life.
Expect to hear: The Girl From Ipanema, Corcovado, What The World Needs Now, Four Brothers, Captain Marvel, One Note Samba, Yesterdays, My Funny Valentine, The Peacocks, It might as well be spring time and many more
