Ali Smith's short stories play with the idea of what a short story is and can be, but, unlike some experimental writers, she manages to keep the reader effortlessly following, delighted to be led along a path with no sense of where it may lead. How does she give readers this sense of being in a safe pair of hands, while challenging and subverting our expectations? What can we learn from a writer who can, by swift turns, both disturb and amuse us?
We'll be looking at stories in the collection The First Person and other stories - about £9 new or around £4 secondhand.
