Arguably the finest poet writing in the English language (and language is a matter we’ll be examining in this session) in the past half-century, Seamus Heaney was a master of resonant and densely textured poetry. Drawing on personal memory and more deeply buried histories, he produced a body of work at once emotional and profoundly thoughtful. We shall be looking at a selection of the poems in detail with a view to discovering the sources of their power, and considering what we might draw from them to help us with our own writing, whether in poetry or prose.
Opened Ground, a very substantial selection, is currently available on Amazon for the reasonable price of £9.99 – well worth buying so that you can familiarise yourself in advance with the poems under review. We shall be looking at all or most of the following poems:
Digging; Death of a Naturalist; Personal Helicon; Bogland; Fodder; Toome; Broagh; The Tollund Man; The Grauballe Man; Punishment; The Strand at Lough Beg; Singing School 2 (A Constable Calls); Fosterling; Squarings i, vi and vii; Postscript.
