David Constantine considers that Silas Marner feels 'like proof that a life going badly can, by good fortune and an answering faith and determination, be put triumphantly right'. We'll be delving into how Eliot handles plot and character development to produce - at the eleventh hour - an outcome that is both moving and satisfying, while avoiding seeming preacherly when delivering, en route, a number of - what feel like - home truths.
Silas Marner is the third (and shortest) of Eliot's novels and paperback editions are widely available for as little as £4 (e.g. Wordsworth edition).
