Event information

Join us on March 25th for a special International Women's Day edition of ZonaSur Cinema Club!

With a screening of two profound films, plus special guest discussion, we will honour the strength, resilience, and transformative power of women’s stories from Latin America.

Our opening short, 'Origami' (Argentina/Colombia/UK, 2024, 10 minutes) tells the tale of a Latin American immigrant woman in the UK who uses the fragile, meditative art of Origami—and the memories of her son woven into each fold—to transcend fear, reclaim her inner freedom, and transform pain into beauty, even as her world threatens to close in around her.
This thought-provoking piece was directed by Fillipe Lezo and written and produced by ZonaSur founder Lorena Briscoe, who will join the audience in conversation about the film later in the evening.

For our main feature tonight, we're proud to present the award-winning 'Prayers for the Stolen' (Spanish title 'Noche de Fuego'; Mexico, 2021, 111 minutes), directed by Tatiana Huezo.

This deeply moving film tells the coming-of-age story of three young girls growing up in a rural Mexican community shaped by violence and resilience, offering a poetic yet unflinching exploration of girlhood, motherhood, and survival. 'Prayers for the Stolen' was praised by critics for its portrayal of female experience and resistance in the face of violent coercion, and was Mexico's official selection for the 2022 Oscars.

Following the screening, we'll join our audience to reflect on the themes raised by these remarkable films, including questions of gender, resistance, memory, and the social realities faced by women in Latin America today.

'Daughter, Wife, Mother: Women’s Resistance from the South' is more than a screening—it is a cultural encounter. The programme seeks to highlight the richness and diversity of Latin American cinema, its historical and social depth, and the urgent voices of women filmmakers and protagonists. By fostering dialogue and reflection, ZonaSur Cinema Club creates a welcoming space for film lovers, students, academics, and the wider community to connect

With the valued support of the British Film Institute (BFI), this event offers a unique opportunity for Oxford audiences to engage with powerful, socially resonant cinema. Come and join us, and experience it for yourself!
