Event information

Avast ye scurvy dogs!

Stick a parrot on your shoulder, shiver your timbers and set sail on the good ship Curio, for an evening of piratical fun and enlightenment!

YARRR! will explore the enduring presence of pirates in the popular imagination, chasing the iconography of the swashbuckling, grog swilling buccaneer as it evolves through literature, film, TV and videogames.

We'll be joined by legendary freebooting historian Dr Richard Blakemore, professor of Social and Maritime History at Reading University and author of the excellent 'Enemies of All - The Rise and Fall of the Pirates'.
Dr Richard will take us on a whirlwind tour of pirate history, its legacy and enduring resonance in pop culture. And to get us into the true bilge rat spirit, we'll also be joined by some amazing Oxford-based shanty singers!

Expect fascinating facts, rollicking, salty tunes, bad pirate jokes and a treasure's chest of the picaresque down in the bookshop vault. Aye, me hearties!
