Guitarist David Preston returns to the East Side this time with his Mu 4tet featuring  heavy weights Alex Hitchcock , Michael Janisch and Marc Michel .

David Preston has been described by the Guardian as “Virtuosic” and TimeOut as “A superb modern jazz guitarist”.

He released his debut album ‘Purple / Black’ on Whirlwind Recordings in 2023 featuring ECM recording artists, Kit Downes, Sebastian Rochford and bassist Kevin Glasgow.

He has been recently touring with Seb Rochford's latest band as well as in Emma Rawicz's Big Band.

A finalist at the Montreux International Guitar competition, David is composer and co-leader for the acclaimed UK modern-jazz trio ‘Preston Glasgow Lowe’ and has released two albums (’16 & ’18) on UK/US label, Whirlwind Recordings. The trio has performed internationally in Japan and Europe as well as playing over 150 concerts throughout the UK.

David has been active as a sideman to a variety of UK musicians such as Jeremy Stacey, Lianne La Havas, Nathaniel Facey, Asaf Sirkis, Peter Ind, Emma Rawicz, Eska, Goldie & the Heritage Orchestra, Jamie Murray, and the internationally celebrated piano and drum virtuoso Gary Husband.

He has performed/toured/recorded with many US artists such as Grammy-Winning US jazz vocalists Melody Gardot, Curtis Stigers, Jesse Harris, and notable US based musicians Sy Smith, David Binney, Ingrid Jensen, Charnett Moffett, Patrick Cornelius and Tim Armacost.

Purple / Black received Editors Choice and a 4 star review in May issue of Jazzwise Magazine.

“Virtuosic" - The Guardian
“You are playing some scary s#!*” - Kurt Rosenwinkel
"Amazingly talented" - Gary Husband

The quartet tonight features saxophonist Alex Hitchcock who played at the the East Side recently with Deschanel Gordon and also with Ant Law

Frenchman Marc Michel on drums who played at the East Side with Emma Rawicz and in Espen Tjalde's Red Kite

The quartet is completed with American bass player Michael Janisch. He is a London-based bassist, composer, producer, and label owner who has established himself as a major force in contemporary improvised music. Originally from the USA, he is widely recognised as a first call electric and double bassist, solo artist, producer and the founder of Whirlwind Recordings, one of the leading independent jazz labels of the past two decade

Much of David’s writing is influenced by his fascination with poly-rhythms and complex interplay between players in the band. It brings interest and surprise to his compositions - you can’t become complacent thinking you know where a piece is going next!
