PUNK, DIY & GRAPHIC DESIGN — Talk, Q&A + DJ Sets
A night celebrating the raw, radical visual world of punk — and supporting the future of grassroots music in North Devon.
Join us for an in‑depth talk, special guest Q&A and musical session exploring the history, influence and legacy of punk graphic design, led by Russ Bestley, one of the UK’s leading punk historians, designers and writers.
Russ is the author of The Art of Punk and Action Time Vision: Punk & Post‑Punk 7” Record Sleeves, editor of the journal Punk & Post‑Punk, and series editor for the Global Punk book series. His work has featured at Louder Than Words Festival, Rebellion Punk Festival, the Design Museum, and The Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas. He also writes for Vive Le Rock and has designed dozens of books, including Pauline Murray’s acclaimed autobiography Life’s A Gamble.
About the Talk
Russ’s latest book, Turning Revolt into Style: The Process and Practice of Punk Graphic Design, explores the relationship between DIY punk creators, major label design studios and commercial printers in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Expect a deep dive into record sleeves, fanzines, posters, flyers, badges, press ads — and the challenges faced by young punk designers pushing against a conservative industry.
Plus…
• Guest contributors joining Russ on stage
• DJ sets spinning rare and obscure punk and post‑punk vinyl
