Event information

Carolyn Hume (piano/keys) and Paul May (drums/intimate metals) describe their music as “walking a tightrope between improvisational and compositional music, catching glimpses between the lines, or surrendering to unrelenting structure. This evening’s music will be primitive and ritualistic, with the melancholy sheen of sci-fi nostalgia and futuristic sophistication. The brilliant cellist, Sonia Hammond will join Hume & May in a trio of deep, sonic exploration.”

The musicians will be joined by dancers Yolanda Snaith, Klara Łucznik and Helen Macphee and saxophonist Andy Williamson in various combinations at different parts of the evening.

A Tiny Festival of Noise
Carolyn and Paul have been coming to Ashburton Arts Centre almost every year since we opened.
Their music is perfect for inspiring dancers to want to perform with them and for the last few years we’ve been delighted to be able to make this happen in various ways. A key catalyst in all of this is mover/choreographer Angus Balberine who came up with 'A Tiny Festival of Noise' as the description for this year's happenings. So, spread over 2 evening performances, some of the regions most dedicated professional dance improvisers will be here joining Carolyn and Paul along with the new addition of cellist Sonia Hammond, to create pieces of instant composition that will delight and surprise! It's always very hard to work out how to describe what will happen in advance. Large parts of the performances are created in the moment as improvisations, with musicians and dancers responding to each other. What results can be beautiful and poignant, surprising, funny – and audiences usually love it! Come and see for yourself.
