Event information

Cherry Burton Arts has been invited to host THE ALAN HULL SONGBOOK featuring Lindisfarne’s DAVE HULL-DENHOLM. The show explores the work of Lindisfarne colleague the late ALAN HULL and will take place at The Village Hall, Cherry Burton nr Beverley on Saturday 14 November 8pm.

Having worked closely with Alan on what became his final solo album ‘Statues and Liberties’ and being a sideman on his solo gigs, son in law Dave is best placed to further explore the fascinating legacy of Alan’s compositions. Singer-songwriter Alan Hull had great success in the seventies and beyond as the voice of Tyneside’s best-loved folk-rock band Lindisfarne and It was a great shock to all the band’s fans when Hull died unexpectedly in 1995. Lindisfarne continue to perform with Dave in the line-up and have a strong following in this area.

Dave will be joined on stage by Alan’s grandson Evan Hull-Denholm on guitar and mandolin, and Lindisfarne bassist Steve Cunningham as they explore the great songs of ‘one of Britain's finest songwriters,’ It certainly will include the well known hits like Lady Eleanor, Run for Home and Fog on the Tyne, but also lesser known gems tucked away on solo albums and band recordings. Hull’s songs have been covered by many other singers including Elvis Costello who described Winter Song as one of the best songs ever written. The songs tap into all emotions –some sad, some funny, some whimsical and some about life’s frustrations- all felt and shared by their writer.

Organiser Martin Peirson added “Alan Hull played one of his last ‘solo’ gigs in Beverley, a scorching hot evening in July 95, and he was joined by Dave on guitar, so it’s very fitting for these great songs to return to the area. Lindisfarne are still enormously popular, so we are very lucky to get the chance to put on this show-it’s worthy of much larger venues! We thought it fitting that as we’ll be enjoying the work of man who enjoyed a drink- we’ll be putting on a bar,-I think he’d like that!”

Doors & Bar open 7.30pm.
