Event information

Vibrant, innovative Kosmos trio joined by international prize-winning accordionist Milos Milivojevic explore the boundaries of Western Classical and Contemporary and World music through Arabic, Gypsy, Balkan, Jazz, Klezmer and Tango.

Internationally acclaimed string trio Kosmos unites the rich texture of the string trio with the depth and integrity of traditional music from the Balkans and beyond. With their inspiring fusion of folk music traditions from around the world, sophisticated jazz glides magically into wild gypsy fiddling, emotive Jewish music into hot-blooded Tango, free improvisation into Arabic melody. Kosmos plays without manuscript, enabling the music to live and breathe in the moment. These world-class, classically trained musicians present an awesome line-up – prepare to be intoxicated by entrancing dance rhythms, soulful improvisation and Gypsy passion delivered with inimitable panache and virtuoso technique.

Since their televised baptism of fire at the 2005 Hydra Rebetika Festival in Greece, Kosmos has thrilled audiences at festivals and music societies across Europe. Recent highlights include performing on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Radio London; performing at the televised Portello River Festival in Italy; Leeds International Concert Season; at top jazz club the Vortex; as part of the society for promotion of new music’s ‘Cutting Edge’ Series in the ICA, West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge; in the Royal Albert Hall’s ‘Ignite’ Series , and the opening of the foyer lunchtime series at the Royal Festival Hall and Wales Millenium Centre. Festivals include Ryedale, Swaledale, Hexham, North Wales International, Oundel , Pulse, Cambridge Summer Music, Corsham, Jewish International festival in Leeds, Deal, Hexham and Bluehouse. Kosmos enjoys collaborating with composers – Robert Fokkens, Nadja-Gabriela Plein, Owen Bourne and Ben Oliver have all written and dedicated pieces to the group. The group also regularly works with other artists and has collaborated with such prestigious musicians as violist Robin Ireland (Lindsay Quartet), percussionist Guy Schalom and regularly with International prize-winning accordionist Milos Milivojevic. Kosmos is also proud of its outreach work and has also has a lot of experience working with children with special needs, adults with learning difficulties, prisoners and the elderly.

“Kosmos is breaking new ground...... the playing is faultless, virtuoso where necessary and always refined and controlled” fRoots
