ACCORDION FROM BRAZIL
The Memory Brazil Project returns to London's Cafe OTO after the success of their earlier concert featuring the Brazilian ten-string guitar. The new show embarks on a journey to the regions of Brazil where the accordion is rooted in traditional culture and plays a part in the everyday lives of local people. Directed by Myriam Taubkin, the project is the culmination of three years of travel, research, recitals and interviews.
Lula Alencar, a renowned accordionist from northeast Brazil, will perform forró, baião and other regional rhythms, blended with contemporary urban sounds from São Paulo, where he is currently based. Luciano Maia, a virtuoso from southern Brazil, brings local styles such as milonga and chamamé, which also form part of the musical heritage of Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
Two great musicians will join them in the concert: the renowned percussionist Adriano Adewale, and the talented guitarist Fernando Machado.
In addition to the concert there will be a film screening about accordion music in Brazil.
Programme:
Luciano Maia (accordion) / Lula Alencar (accordion) / Adriano Adewale (percussion) / Fernando Machado (acoustic guitar) + Myriam Taubkin (director)
