Event information

Clang Sayne

Directed by Irish songwriter/musician Laura Hyland, Clang Sayne emerged as a result of numerous collaborations between Laura and various London-based improvisors over the past three years.

Hyland sings and plays acoustic guitar, James O Sullivan, prepared electric guitar, Peter Marsh, double bass, and Paul May, percussion.

Their debut album, 'Winterlands' has attracted a steady stream of positive response from UK and international critics, alike since its release last September. Their music is unambiguously song-based, but continuously drifts in and out of a vast atmospheric soundscape that seamlessly weaves together influences from free jazz to traditional folk to avant-rock, and yet couldn't be labeled as any of the above.

They have been described as "showcasing an uncategorisable approach to song craft that brings to mind the music of Tim Buckley, Jandek and David Sylvian's collaborations with Derek Bailey." (Boomkat), "Sandy Denny at her most fervent joining the sessions for Mark Hollis’ solo record" (Baked Goods), and "an explicit and compelling example of 'music that interrogates traditional forms but explodes them due to some unnameable creative imperative'” (Scott McMillian, Mapsidaisical).

CJ Boyd

Equal parts ambient and virtuosic, melancholic and playful, CJ Boyd’s bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms, while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to dizzy the sun in its path. Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Riley with what might be called the maximalism of Beethoven's chamber music. Add some Moondog, Authur Russell, Godspeed, Eluvium. But with the improvisational prowess culled from jazz. Not a "bassplayer" in the usual sense of the word. But something refreshing and impressive—with fingers that only know how to dance to the deepest tunes.

Kaneng Lolang

Kaneng Lolang hails from Nigeria and Bulgaria from where her sound feeds its folkloric, pre and post colonial influences into modern freeform song. With vocals, bass and various primitive instruments all combined through delay pedals, the result is one of the most visceral solo performances. Her collaborations include projects with TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe, Sadjelko and native american painter and musician Brad Kahlhamer. She cites as her musical mentors NY saxophonist Charles Gayle and Brooklyn fatherless men's coach Taharqa Aleem. Lolang self-released 'The Last Offering', an EP of personal and artistic statements resulting from her recent years in NY - an essential
introduction to her sonic home. She continues to make films and draw, and is currently recording a full length album to be released in late 2010.
