Event Information

Harpin’ by the Sea is where harmonica players of all abilities enjoy instruction, music making and headline performances. HBTS presents established artists, promotes new talent, encourages first timers, welcomes junior players and supports local charities. This year HBTS launches its inaugural Harmonicas for Healing symposium.

WORKSHOPS
Our workshop team comprises harmonica expert tutors Mark Hummel, Ed Hopwood, Richard Taylor, Paul Gillings, John Cook and Quim Roca.

Beginners
Join us on a journey of discovery from opening the box, learning key skills and repertoire, all the way to your first bends. Our workshops are led by Richard Taylor and Paul Gillings. Beginners will need a 10 hole harmonica in the key of C. These are available on purchase on the day. Full information on the event website. Intermediates
Our intermediate programme starts with a short bending clinic to reinforce everyone’s foundation skills. You will then be introduced to some new concepts and styles by our guest tutors Mark Hummel (USA) and Ed Hopwood (UK). Mark specialises in West Coast electric blues, while Ed specialises in blues, zydeco, old-time & bluegrass styles. Afternoon options include our Masterclass with Richard Taylor, our Tuning workshop with John Cook & Gene Myers, and our Guest Artists’ panel discussion.

Advanced
If you've been playing for many years, but want to develop new skills such as idiomatic styles, overbends, positional playing, timing and natural tone, this is the workshop for you. Your workshops are led by our guest tutors Mark Hummel (USA) and Ed Hopwood (UK). Mark specialises in West Coast electric blues, while Ed specialises in blues, zydeco, old-time & bluegrass styles. Afternoon options include our Masterclass with Richard Taylor, our Tuning workshop with John Cook & Gene Myers, and our Guest Artists’ panel discussion.

Children
Sunday morning is dedicated to younger players of all abilities, 5-14 years. Our exciting programme is led by Richard Taylor, Director of Harp Academy, the UK’s leading schools harmonica teaching service. Richard’s team provides two hours of music making and repertoire learning, culminating in a live performance on stage. A harmonica in the key of C is included in the ticket price and everyone takes home a goody bag. Grown-ups should remain on site and can relax with free Wi-Fi and refreshments in The Brunswick’s bar area

GUEST ARTISTS
Our star studded evening show features the following special guest artists…

Mark Hummel (USA)
Joining us from California, Mark is the harmonica player’s harmonica player, recognised universally as a master of the West Coast electric blues style. Prepare to be dazzled!

Kat Baloun (USA)
The inspiration for numerous emerging harmonica artists, from Ohio (by way of Berlin), Kat Baloun brings joy, pizzazz and her charismatic brand of blues to the stage. Fabulous!

Ed Hopwood (UK)
From his home on the River Thames, Ed excels at old school harmonica, performing with The Rigmarollers and heading up his own one-man band. Less is a whole lot more!

We teach 10-hole diatonic harmonica. Beginners bring key of C. Intermediate and Advanced players bring a selection of keys. Harmonicas are available to buy on the day. Further kit, FAQs and full information is available on the event website.
